In 1997, Stephen Conley left his job as an Art Director
at TIME Magazine and bought a home on 23 acres in the mountains of
Northeastern Pennsylvania where he then built a studio.
This was
but a continuation of nearly a life long career as an artist-from growing up
watching the “magical” emerge from the blank, white space of watercolor
board in the form of illustrations created by his mother—
to the romance of the new American painting of the1950’s. It was the
seduction of Abstract Expressionism during his teenage years that ultimately
lured Conley to New York. There, the struggle to paint and survive in the
City introduced him to work as a graphic designer and, later, into the age
of computer-driven art, design, and photography—
all of which he transformed into resources for his own use.
Conley’s current paintings strongly manifest influences of contemporary
culture in the form of film, video and digital imagery. Conley deals with
both the personal and that with which our society is collectively obsessed—
in particular sex and violence. The works are complex, multi-layered
acrylic paintings that are created by a unique stencil and industrial spray
method that he first refined years ago.
